Newly discovered extra vocabulary of Wester Boswell.
In the 1870s, Bath Smart and Henry Crofton, collected old inflected Romani from Anglo Romani people, in particular, Wester Boswell and Isaac Heron. Their ground-breaking book, “The Dialect of the English Gypsies,” recording the last of the old inflected Anglo Romani, appeared in in 1875. The following year, a revised edition was produced. The revised edition was thanks in no small measure to the additions and amendments made by Wester and his personal copy of the first edition with those changes has come into my possession. Although about 60% of Wester’s words appeared in the second edition, it leaves a substantial proportion which did not and this booklet is them. Price £7.95 |

Most up to date booklet and most extensive on the so-called secret speech of the Pavee Irish Travellers. 2000 words in total plus phrases and one longer text.
Words are listed so as to identify those heard in Victorian times those in use in the 1960s/70s and those heard today. Up to date evidence for the main origin of the Pavee people is given to show that the presumed main origin from the potato famines is not feasible. There are clues that whilst Gammon was once an Irish Gaelic based language, it is now a dialect only and subject to continuous change. This lexicon provides a valuable resource for all Irish studies, especially those involving the Pavee people themselves. A4 size, 63 pages, 24 illustrations. Price £12.95 |
