Historical and Legal Documents
Original fascinating document listing the cases at York Summer Assizes, July 1863. Several, possible Romanies in court but also some very interesting cases listed. See scans above for more detail. The reason for thinking they;re Romani is that even for very minor offences they do not get bail yet some of the more serious defendants accused of crimes as serious as murder do! £35.

Hawker License Law. Very rare original copy of an amendment to the law relating to hawkers' licences (and stamp duty) from 1859 requiring hawkers, pedlars etc to have a licence on which stamp duty must be paid. Persons caught without a licence would be fined a quarter of the prosecution costs plus pay the costs. Bought for £85, reduced to £60.

Very rare copy of 'Vagrant Laws', returns under the vagrancy laws for England Wales for 1820-23. Covers every county and is a treasury of names for the Romani/Traveller researcher and for the family history searcher. It's the names and 'crimes' of people committed to prison or house of correction under the vagrancy laws of that time. £75.
